Via Appia

The book Via Appia by Andrea Frazzetta takes the reader on a visual journey along the ancient Roman road, from Rome to Brindisi. Through a non-linear narrative, the images reconstruct the identity of the places along the route, offering an immersive and timeless experience. The book is enriched by a text by Paolo Rumiz, which opens and closes the photographic editing curated by Tiziana Faraoni, deepening the historical and spiritual significance of the journey.

Produced in conjunction with the designation of the Via Appia as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the volume celebrates the historical and cultural significance of this extraordinary ancient artery, preserving its memory through images and words.

The leporello structure allows for a continuous flow of photographs, enhancing their visual impact. On the back of each image, detailed captions guide the reader without interfering with the visual storytelling. The title was designed drawing inspiration from Roman engraved lettering, reinterpreted in a modern key. This, along with a stylized depiction of the basolato (ancient paving stones), is laser-engraved on the cover, evoking the nickname "Strada del Fuoco" (Road of Fire) given to a stretch of the Appian Way. This balance between words and images enhances the essence of the Regina Viarum, weaving a connection between past and present.

In June 2024, on the occasion of the presentation of the book Via Appia. The road that taught us to travel, an audio-visual installation was set up at Capo di Bove, the headquarters of the Appian Way Archaeological Park.

The installation, conceived by Giovanni Carrada, transformed the space into an immersive journey, where images, sounds, and words brought to life the millennia-old history of the Regina Viarum. Through a visual and sound narrative, visitors symbolically traveled along the ancient Appian Way, gaining a deeper understanding of its historical significance and cultural value.

The integration of photography, video, and soundscapes created a compelling experience, capturing the essence of the journey along the Via Appia through a contemporary language. This project combined historical research, visual exploration, and technological innovation, expanding the narrative that began with the book.
